BOOM! The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) elections concluded over the weekend, and the elected team is buzzing like never before! Lt. Col (RTD) Nashon Randiek stormed back into the presidency unopposed, not just to lead but to ignite a four-year term which he stated would be his legacy term. This isn’t just a new term “it’s a high-octane mission to now catapult Kenyan hockey from dusty pitches to global glory” he said. Strap in, because this ride’s about to get wild!
The new KHU crew hit the ground with a to-do list that’s as bold as it gets. First up? A constitutional glow-up to match the Sports Act 2013, as demanded by Sports Registrar Ms Rose Wasike, who oversaw the polls with The African Hockey Federation (AFHF) President Seif Ahmed. “Fix your constitution, and anyone not satisfied with the elections has 30 days to take it to the Sports Disputes Tribunal,” Wasike roared, laying down the law. The President, cool as a sniper, didn’t blink. He reiterated the same directions to the executive board and the media “We will assemble a team to review the constitution from top to bottom. We are determined to do this and this time we must get it right,”. This was the first time the union got an opportunity to test the constitution that was first cobbled up in 2017 in preparation for the transition from the previous Sociaties Act and hence the inevitability of the glaring gaps identified during the electoral proces. In all honesty, this was a most welcome democratic process that only acts to help the sport improve in its governance.
Now is the President and his team just pushing paper? Picture this: a shiny new blue turf at City Park Stadium, “My team’s got the game covered; I’m hunting that turf like it’s the Holy Grail,” he grinned, leveraging his new gig as National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) Second Deputy President to score big resources. With NOC-K in his corner, Randiek feels this can be a game changer in terms of resources.
The real magic, though, is happening at the grassroots. The executive board has its work cut out and is on a mission to unearth hockey superstars from every corner of Kenya, building on Development programs in Mombasa, Kisumu, and Kakamega and supporting development programs such as Wazalendo Hockey Club’s Young Player Development (YPD) Program, Hesa bradelings, Kimilili panthers, Tunza Sports Foundation, Obama, Goldstein Hockey Foundation amongst others. The treasurer elected for his second term lamented that “We’re scrappy, strapped for cash, but we’re all in,” he said, practically daring and inviting the hockey fraternity and other stakeholders to come on board. “We need partners who can match our hustle—let’s make this bigger, louder, better!” It’s not just talent scouting; it’s a nationwide treasure hunt for the next hockey legends,” were the sentiments of the newly elected PRO.
Now, we should be talking about Africa domination. The 2025 Hockey Africa Cup of Nations in Ismailia, Egypt (October 11-18) is looming, and it’s not just a tournament—it’s a World Cup qualifier that could rewrite Kenya’s hockey story,” said Wycliffe Ong’ori the elected SG on his 2nd term.
Both men’s and women’s squads will be locked in by end of August, with the men’s team, who nabbed fourth in 2022, hungry for a podium spot. And don’t sleep on the even bigger dream: the LA2028 Olympics.
The AFHF’s President, Mr. Seif Ahmed was over the moon with the elections affirming how important Kenya is to East Africa and Africa Hockey due to its central location to the African Continent relative to the hockey nations in the North and those in the South. “Fantastic, democratic, transparent elections—Kenya’s the real deal!” he cheered. “You’re a cornerstone of African hockey, and we’re here to help you soar.” With that kind of backup, the sky’s the limit.
